Town centre and Place de la République
Place de la République, Privas’s shopping heart, lines up its terraces under plane trees and hosts the Wednesday morning market. People come for a coffee, to wander the stalls or simply to watch local life go by. Just steps away, the Diane de Poitiers Tower, a rare remnant of the old fortifications, recalls the city’s Protestant history, once nicknamed the little Geneva of the Vivarais.
Louis XIII Bridge and the Ouvèze banks
The Louis XIII Bridge, built in the 17th century, crosses the Ouvèze with a single elegant arch: it is one of the town’s most photographed spots. Below, the riverbanks lend themselves to a quiet walk, away from the bustle. The stroll can be extended up to Mont Toulon, which overlooks Privas and offers an open view over the valley, perfect for a spontaneous picnic.
Candied chestnuts and the Coiron plateau
French capital of the candied chestnut, Privas celebrates the Ardèche chestnut every autumn with the Castagnades. A good chance to taste chestnut cream, confectionery and local pastries together. All around, the basalt Coiron plateau awaits hikers and curious wanderers. On Lyad, members from Privas share their favourite walks and tables; it is up to you to find someone to discover them with.
